Statement from Progress Michigan Executive Director on Federal Balanced Budget Amendment Moving Out of Committee

LANSING — Today, the Republican chair of the House Financial Liability Reform Committee, Rep. Earl Poleski (R-Jackson), continually silenced the voices of Democrats on the committee. Democrats were speaking out on amendments to a Senate resolution that would call for a state convention to amend the U.S. Constitution to include a balanced budget amendment.

“These tactics from conservatives on the House Financial Liability Reform Committee harken back to the days when Right to Work was being rammed through the legislature while the Capitol doors were locked tight — a day when the voices of Michiganders were silenced and our democracy played second fiddle to the whims of those in power,” said Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan. “This is no way to run a government and yet we continue to see the same underhanded tactics – time and time again – from Republicans who want to silence the voice of Michiganders and push their agenda through without any meaningful discussion about the impacts on the people of Michigan.”
